Gulf Coast Insurance owner voted as new Escambia County Contractor Competency Board member

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- A new member will sit on the Escambia County Contractor Competency Board in November.

Thursday night, county commissioners voted to place Mary Jordan on the board to fill the seat of Rebecca Fiorello, who resigned in August.

Mary Jordan is the owner of Gulf Coast Insurance in Escambia County.

She will take her seat in November.

The county commission started making changes to the board after complaints mounted against Pensacola contractors Matthew Banks and Jesse LaCoste.

They're accused of taking down payments, and not completing the work or even starting it.

Fiorello is not the only board member who needed a replacement.

Former Contractor Competency Board Member Larry Downs Jr. was voted off of the board by Escambia County commissioners for continuously recusing himself on decisions relating to contractors Matthew Banks and Jesse LaCoste.

The county says those interested in serving on the board have until end of day Friday to submit their application to fill the vacancy left by Downs.

Former board member Larry Downs Jr. spoke to commissioners, criticizing them for removing him from the board.

"I get y'alls feelings were hurt when I recused myself," Downs said. "Just like y a'll do when you recuse yourself. So I just want them to keep in mind that they're here to represent the citizens and not y'all four or five. Thank you."

After the application deadline, there is no word on when a vote will take place for Downs' replacement.
